You guys. I am usually very much against anything Christmas before Thanksgiving. But it’s 2020 and I decided that all rules are out the window. We can all use a little cheer right now as this year winds down and ain’t nobody got time to wait another couple weeks to decorate for the holidays.

So I put most of our decorations up on November 1st. But our main tree wasn’t cooperating. I don’t know who told our tree that it was 2020, but somehow it got the message.

Our Christmas Tree Problems of 2020

After pulling all the pieces of the tree out of the box and plugging in all the lights, half of the lights on the top section didn’t work. Ugh. Since the whole strand wasn’t out, I knew it wasn’t the fuse. And I found this nifty tool on Amazon called an Ulta Lit Light Keeper PRO.

Supposedly this tool can fix your broken strand of lights by magic (my word, not theirs). You take ANY bulb from the dead strand out and put the empty socket into this tool, click the trigger a few times, and the lights suddenly work again.

Spoiler alert: That didn’t work for this section of my tree. But I think that’s because it wasn’t that kind of broken, if that makes sense. However, this nifty tool also has a voltage tester, bulb tester and little part that helps you pull bulbs out. Using these, I was able to identify the faulty bulb and replace it fairly easily.

Once I got the lights working, Pearson and I started putting the decorations on. We didn’t finish it all in one night and while I was out running an errand the next morning, Pearson sent me the picture below. Ugh. More lights were suddenly out.

But guess what!! This time the magical tool worked! I am so mad that I didn’t take a video of it. I chose a random bulb from the section that wasn’t lit, took the bulb out of the socket, inserted the socket into the tool, and pulled the trigger.

Full disclosure: It didn’t work the first time. On their website, lightkeeperpro.com, the company suggests stopping if the lights don’t come back on after 30 pulls of the trigger. So I did. But I decided to try again on the same socket just in case part of the tree was in the way or something and as soon as I put the socket back into the tool, the lights came on! I basically started screaming I was so excited that it worked.

I used the tool to test the original bulb that I had pulled out and it was fine. So I put it back in the socket and voila! Good as new!

Decorating the Tree(s)

As I said before, I call this our “main tree.” We decorate it with a variety of ornaments from both of our childhoods plus ones we’ve acquired over the years of our marriage. Most of the ornaments on this treet mean something to us but some are just fun or pretty.

Honestly while I was decorating this year, I realized that we might actually have too many ornaments for this one tree. As I pulled them all out of the bin thought I could probably split these into a couple different themed trees.

But we don’t have room for any more trees. We currently live in a one bedroom apartment. Yep, we downsized in February right before COVID happened and we both were confined to the house for the foreseeable future.

So we put this “main tree” in the middle of our living area between the couch and the dining table. It’s very central and I kind of love it.

We also have a small 3.75 foot tree in our bedroom. Everything on this tree is from our wedding and I love it so much!

For our wedding we used the tulle in both the ceremony and reception decor. The stars were hanging in the doorway leading into the reception in the shape of an arch.

Other Christmas Decor

I’m so excited that we finally live in an apartment with a fireplace! This one is electric and has a HUGE mantle. I mean it’s a foot and a half deep and five feet wide. I put all my favorite decorations up there!

The electric fireplace below was given to us by Pearson’s parents for Christmas in —-. It’s traveled with us from Ohio to our first Oregon apartment and then to our current apartment. Now we have an electric fireplace in the living room and the bedroom.

I like to decorate our bathroom with snowmen. I brought home this figurine on the counter and the canvas print above the toilet from my mom’s house last year. I just think they’re so cute and I made a snowman out of toilet paper to match!
