The Best and Worst Marriage Advice I’ve Received (#LoveBlog2017 – Giveaway & Linkup)

Happy Thursday! We’re more than half way through the month of February and I have been loving the #LoveBlog2017 linkup! I’m hosting again today and the topic is “Wisdom.” Check out Brita’s introductory post to see the prompts for the rest of the month.

Today I thought I’d share some marriage advice but I want to have some fun with it. So here is both te BEST and the WORST marriage advice I’ve ever heard!

Best Marriage Advice we Received:

Communicate. Your spouse wants (or should want) to know about you. Sharing is as much a part of quality conversation as listening is. If your spouse’s primary love language is Quality Time/Conversation, then their love tank will never be full if you don’t share what you are feeling. Also, listen. Sometimes your spouse isn’t looking for a solution. They just want you to listen and sympathize.

Always tell the truth. I sort of talked about this one last Friday.

Don’t stop dating or flirting or studying each other. Just because you’re married now doesn’t mean you can stop trying to impress your spouse. Even though you spend a lot of time together now that you are married and you live together, you still need to set aside special time to spend together. Get dressed up and feel pretty. Do things you don’t normally do. Spend quality time and conversation together away from the TV. You both still need to feel loved, wanted, and attractive.

Do something every day to connect. Even if it’s just 10 minutes of talking about your days.

Put away technology. When I am spending time with my husband, I try to not even have my phone on me, but it’s tough. I know some people have “no technology in the bedroom” rules. I at least don’t have it with me at the dinner table.

Don’t bring up old issues. Pearson and I attended a weekend marriage seminar when we were engaged and this was one of the big points. The couple presenting this point said that after they have a fight, they flush the argument down the toilet. Literally. They write the problem down on a piece of paper throw it in the toilet and flush. This somewhat ridiculous gesture helps them remember that the issue is over and will not affect future conflicts. You see, when you unnecessarily bring up old arguments, it only fuels the fire and doesn’t help anything. Everybody makes mistakes, but we learn from them and move on.

Hold hands everywhere.

You’re not just marrying him, you’re marrying his whole family. Ok so this might be a little extreme and exaggerated, but the point is they are now your family too so you might want to make sure you can get along with them.

Don’t compare your marriage to others. You are two individual and unique people so your marriage is unique as well. What works for other people might not work for you and vice versa. Comparing only brings negative things to light and nothing good can come of it. Also, don’t compare your marriage to the movies.

Keep God first. What does this look like? Pray with your spouse. Pray for your spouse. Study the Bible with your spouse. Go to God with conflicts in your marriage. Make church and the Bible a priority. Find other Christian couple friends to fellowship with.

Worst Marriage Advice we Received:

Don’t go to bed angry. If you are having an argument, sometimes you need sleep on it and you will be more rational in the morning.

Marriage is 50/50. I think we can all agree that this is bad advice, but I also think Marriage 100/100 is bad advice. Nobody can give 100% all the time. I LOVE Brita’s take on the percentages in marriage thing.

Marriage is difficult. Ok, yes marriage is difficult sometimes. But I don’t think it’s necessarily good to go into a marriage expecting it to be the hardest thing you’ll do and that it’s doomed to fail. Life is hard. And marriage takes work. But if you work at it, you can help each other get through the difficulties of life. If you don’t work at it, the difficulties of life may tear you apart.

Be the safe haven for him to come home to. Again, I guess this advice isn’t so bad on the surface. I like to make our home a comfortable and peaceful place, but I don’t stress out about it. My soul purpose in life is not to make my home a safe haven for my husband. If I’ve had a bad day, I’m going to show that in my face and body language. I try not to bog him down too much with my problems, but I’m not going to put on a show like everything’s alright when it’s not. He doesn’t want me to do that either!

The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. We’ll end on a sort of silly one. This is just not true. The way to a man’s heart is through his heart. 🙂
