The Best Holiday Movies you can Stream for Date Night

As I mentioned last week in my blog post about pandemic holiday date ideas, it is about time I created an updated blog post about holiday movies! I wrote a quick list of my favorite Christmas movies and specials back in 2014, but my preferences have changed since then. Plus we now have more streaming services to choose from!

This post may contain affiliate links. If you purchase through my link, I get a small commission at no cost to you. Read my disclosure policy to learn more.

So anyway, I thought I would list out some of the best Christmas movies that you can watch on date night on each streaming service. Granted, these are just the streaming services for which I have a subscription. But to be honest, Pearson and I actually subscribe to a lot (Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, and HBO Max).

Here is a list of the Best Holiday Movies you can Stream for Date Night on Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video, Disney Plus, and HBO Max!

A few disclaimers before we get started:

Now none of these movies are super cheesy Hallmark-esc movies. A lot of these streaming services have movies like that, but Pearson doesn’t like them (and I’m not a huge fan either). So I didn’t think those were great for date night.

These are all movies that I’ve either seen myself or I’ve heard good things about them and plan to watch them this year.

And lastly, some of these are repeats because they can be watched in multiple places. So if you don’t subscribe to one of the streaming services, check for the movie under another one!

The Best Holiday Movies you can Stream for Date Night on…

Netflix:

The Christmas Chronicles 1 & 2

Pearson and I watched The Christmas Chronicles last year and it was really good! Kurt Russell’s portrayal of Santa is fantastic. It’s a movie about Christmas Eve involving kids who get into shenanigans with Santa. So it’s a classic story full of magic and fun but this one has a few differences up it’s sleeve. We haven’t watched the second one in the series but we plan to this year. And if it’s anything like the first, it is totally worth it!

How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2000)

This is my favorite version of the classic story. Okay full disclosure, I haven’t seen the animated one from 2018. But it’s hard to beat Jim Carrey’s Grinch, am I right? I’m so glad it’s on Netflix this year!

Jingle Jangle

I watched Jingle Jangle by myself a few weeks ago and I was thoroughly impressed! I’ve been trying to convince Pearson to watch it with me. He doesn’t hate musicals as much as he used to but I’m not sure he will like the “magic physics” (my own term) as much as I did. However the music, dancing. colors, cast, and ambiance are all impeccable. The magic just makes it that much better for me!

Klaus

I haven’t actually seen this Netflix original, but I really wanted to when it came out last year. The trailers make it look so good. Plus it was nominated for an academy award. It’s definitely on our list this year!

Hulu:

Home Alone (with live TV subscription)

You can’t beat Home Alone at Christmas time, am I right? The first one is the best but the others aren’t bad either. I haven’t really watched it in several years but it used to be a big part of my holiday traditions every year. Unfortunately you can only watch it on Hulu if you have the live TV subscription but you can also watch it on Disney Plus or rent it on Amazon.

Elf (with STARZ add on)

Elf is another classic. I seriously can’t believe it came out 17 years ago! It’s one of the most quotable Christmas movies out there. You have to have the STARZ add on to watch Elf on Hulu. But you can also rent it on Amazon, Google Play, Youtube, and other places.

The Holiday (with live TV subscription)

This one is arguably Hallmark-esc. But it came out before Hallmark movies got big. So I count it as just a good rom-com set during the Christmas season. Anyway, it’s a good one but again you have to have the live TV addition to your Hulu subscription.

Christmas with the Kranks (with live TV subscription)

Christmas with the Kranks is such a fun movie! I mean Tim Allen and Jamie Lee Curtis? You can’t go wrong! It’s definitely a funny classic you and your spouse can both enjoy. Again you have to have live TV on Hulu but also again, you can rent it on Amazon or anywhere!

Amazon Prime:

It’s a Wonderful Life

This is my all time favorite Christmas movie. It always has been. I just love the moral of the story. I cry every time George Bailey realizes the world is a better place with him in it and that the whole town loves him. I’m so glad it’s included with any Amazon Prime membership!

Christmas Cartoons: 14 Christmas Cartoon Classics – 2 Hours of Holiday Favorites

This is a fun two hour long special containing lot’s of little short cartoons. I included it with these holiday movies because it contains a couple of specials from my favorites list back in 2014, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and Jack Frost! It might be fun to watch these while baking cookies or decorating the tree. See how many you remember from your childhood.

Jack Frost (1998) (with AMC add on)

Do you guys remember this movie? I remember loving it as a kid. I don’t want to spoil too much but Michael Keaton gets to be a snow man. Anyway, it’s another fun one with lots of magic, family, and snow!

Polar Express (with AMC add on)

Everybody loves The Polar Express, right? I mean you can never have enough Tom Hanks, am I right? I think this was an instant classic as soon as it came out in 2004. I seriously can’t believe that was 16 years ago! Anyway, you can watch it free on Prime with the AMC add on or rent it for a few bucks.

Elf (with STARZ or AMC)

I’ve already talked about Elf but it’s on here again because you can also watch it on Amazon Prime with the STARZ or AMC add on. Or you could just rent it for $3.99 with Prime.

Disney Plus:

Home Alone (1, 2, & 3)

You guys. When I saw that Home Alone was on Disney Plus I did a little dance. No joke. I’m not sure if it was on there last year or not but I haven’t seen it in years because I couldn’t stream it on any of my subscription services. First world problems, I know. Anyway, one, two, and three are all on there! You’re welcome.

The Santa Clause (1, 2, & 3)

The Santa Clause is another classic from my childhood. Again, I love the magic of it all. I love suspending my disbelief for these movies about Santa Clause. A story about a normal single father accidentally becoming the next Santa Claus checks all the boxes! The Santa Clause 1, 2, & 3 are all on Disney Plus.

A Christmas Carol (2009)

I have to admit it’s been a while since I watched this version of A Christmas Carol. But with Jim Carrey playing Scrooge and all of the ghosts, I just feel like you can’t go wrong. I definitely want to watch this one this year.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

This may be my favorite version of A Christmas Carol. I watched it with my best friend every year when we lived in Ohio. I don’t think we’ve watched it since moving here to Oregon so I think it might just be time this year.

Mickey’s Christmas Carol

This is another fun version of the same classic story. Is it weird that the thing I remember most about this movie is that a door knocker turns into Goofy’s face?

Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

You guys! Disney Plus has the ORIGINAL Miracle on 34th Street from 1947! I haven’t seen the original in forever! We watch the new(er) version with the little girl from Matilda every year. Fun fact, this is Pearson’s favorite Christmas movie. I’m excited to watch the original this year!

Nightmare Before Christmas

Of course I have to include the Nightmare Before Christmas. It’s been a tradition of ours to watch it around Thanksgiving since it encompasses Halloween and Christmas. But we didn’t get around to that this year. If I don’t get to watch it before the end of the year, I’m going to be sad.

Noelle

This cute movie came to Disney Plus last year but we just got around to watching it this week. It was so fun! Anna Kendrik and Bill Hader are are Santa’s kids and they have to navigate growing up and taking on the Kringle responsibilities. So funny and cute!

HBO Max:

Last Christmas

This one may be a little more mature than most on this list. But it is so good! There was even a twist that we didn’t completely see coming. It was cute, funny, and heartwarming. It has all the elements for a great holiday date night movie!

A Christmas Carol (1938)

I’m honestly not sure if I’ve ever seen this version of A Christmas Carol, but it’s probably great. The old ones always are!

Home Alone (4 & Holiday Heist)

I know I haven’t seen these two in the Home Alone series. And I’ve heard they’re not as good as the earlier ones with Macaulay Culkin. But I decided to include them on this list of holiday movies because I was surprised to see them on HBO Max. Plus, to be honest, there wasn’t much on HBO Max that I have seen before and considered good for date night.

Toys

This is a movie from my childhood that I had completely forgotten about until I saw it on HBO Max! It’s such a fun and heart warming story. ANd with a cast including Robin Williams, Michael Gambon, Joan Cusack, and Robin Wright, you can’t go wrong!

So what do you think? Did I miss any good holiday movies for date night on my lists? Let me know in the comments!

  1. I can’t believe I’ve seen all of these. We watched Christmas Chronicles 2 and Jingle Jangle twice since they’ve come out. We love them!

  2. We just got Disney + and I love all of the content that they have for the holidays. Godmothered might be my new favorite to watch every year!

  3. I love all the cheesy Hallmark style movies, but Dan does not. So we have to compromise with holiday favorites. The Santa Clause is probably my favorite modern Christmas film, and It’s a Wonderful Life is my favorite classic.

We watched Noelle last year and loved it.

I’m excited to see so many options on Disney+ Dan and I are staying home for Christmas this year, our first time not celebrating the holidays with family. I see lots of holiday films in our future, most likely The Santa Clause films and Home Alone films. Although Netflix has a Dolly Parton movie that’s supposed to be great, so I might convince Dan to watch that one too. And then I’ll watch the cheesy romantic films while he works on his latest project. 😉

  4. So many great holiday movies to watch! I need to rewatch a lot of these suggestions. I haven’t seen a holiday movie since I was a kid. It’s always nice to watch these movies to get in the holiday spirit!

  5. I love date night! The first year my husband and I were married we went and saw the Grinch in theaters. Still one of my favorite date nights!
