Do We Have a Problem With Disposability?

Do We Have a Problem With Disposability?

Once upon a time, I heard a comparison that I thought was really cool.

Well, not cool. But definitely interesting. One of the people Fawn Weaver interviewed for her book The Happy Wives Club said that the reason so many people get divorced today is because we live in a disposable society.

Let me explain. When our parents were growing up, they would keep a TV for 20 years or so until it fell apart. But today we get a new one every couple years just because a newer, better model came out.

If something’s broken, we throw it out. Back in the day, they would fix it. They would do everything they could to repair it, and if they couldn’t, they’d hire someone who knew what they were doing.

It’s not just TV’s. We also do this with cell phones, computers, gaming consoles, refrigerators etc. A lot of people even do this with cars! They trade up every couple years for the newest model just because there’s a new one out there.

And now this mind set is even affecting our marriages. People tend to throw their marriages away at the first sign of a problem. Or they trade it in as soon as they see something newer or better.

When I heard this comparison, it really made a lot of sense to me. I mean, I see how society is changing and how it’s having such a negative impact on our marriages. But that doesn’t mean we have to give in to society.

We can go back to the old ways. Instead of upgrading to a newer and better version, why don’t we keep our marriage forever? Instead of throwing it away when it’s “broken” and getting a new one, why don’t we do everything we can to fix it and maybe even hire a counselor when we need a little extra help.

We should totally go back to the way things were when people cared less about material things and valued marriage relationships enough to work on them and make them last.

I'm a millennial wife and fur-mom living in Oregon. I'm passionate about marriages and making them last. I believe it's possible to build a marriage that will endure whatever comes your way and all it takes is a little work. And trust me, your marriage is so worth that effort!
