It’s Perfectly Okay to Need Your Spouse

One thing I cannot stand about our society today is the pressure there is on women to be strong and independent.

Let me clarify. It is great to be a strong and independent, but it sort of becomes a problem for me when people pressure you to be independent from your husband.

Personally, I have always been fearful of coming across “too clingy.” I am always ashamed to tell Pearson that I need him and miss him and I don’t like it when he works late all the time. At least I was back when we were dating – I’ve matured a lot in this area. In the back of my mind, I’m concerned that other people will snicker and roll their eyes thinking that I’m “that wife” who can’t survive without her husband.

But this is totally crazy! When God established marriage, he intended for the husband and wife to help each other (Genesis 2:18). A married couple is supposed “hold fast” to one another (Genesis 2:24, Mark 10:7-9). Solomon’s lover in the Song of Solomon longs to be with him and confesses that she needs him in chapter 3 verses 3 and 4.

Being a strong woman is good. But being an independent woman, at least independent from your husband, can be very bad. It can get in the way of your love. You need to be completely open and vulnerable in front of your husband. And your husband would love to hear that you need him. Isn’t it nice to feel needed? Your husband feels the same way. Being independent is overrated. Being “clingy’ (at least a little bit) is pretty attractive in my opinion!

So boost his ego a bit and tell him you need him. Tell him you miss him and show him how glad you are when he comes home! I think it will lift your spirits as well!

Do you ever tell your spouse you need him/her? Have you seen the same stigma on that concept in your life?
