What 10 Famous People Have to Say About Communication

Hey guys. I’m back. I took a week long break (sort of) on accident. Sorry. Actually, I’m not sorry. Anyway, since today is Wednesday, I want to talk about marriage.

If you remember, back in November I conducted a survey about the issues couples face the most in their marriage. Back in January (and some in February), I talked a lot about the number one issue according to that survey: prioritizing time with your spouse (the posts are linked below if you missed them).

The second biggest generalized issue from that survey was communication. There’s a LOT to be said about communication. It’s not easy.

To start of my “series” on this topic, I thought I’d share some quotes from famous people that I found on the subject.

The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place. –George Bernard Shaw

The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t said. –Peter Drucker

To effectively communicate, we must realize that we are all different in the way we perceive the world and use this understanding as a guide to our communication with others. –Tony Robbins

The two words ‘information’ and ‘communication’ are often used interchangeably, but they signify quite different things. Information is giving out; communication is getting through. –Sydney J. Harris

Effective communication is 20% what you know and 80% how you feel about what you know. –Jim Rohn

Good communication is as stimulating as black coffee, and just as hard to sleep after. –Anne Morrow Lindbergh

Two monologues do not make a dialogue.” –Jeff Daly

Any problem, big or small, within a family, always seems to start with bad communication. Someone isn’t listening. –Emma Thompson

You cannot truly listen to anyone and do anything else at the same time. –Scott Peck

The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug. –Mark Twain

Those are some powerful quotes wouldn’t you agree? What I took from these quotes is that communication is more than just talking and that it’s often hard to get your point across.

What did you learn from these quotes?
