What I’ve been Reading, Watching, and Listening To {July 2018}

Confession: I am finishing this post on August 6th. I’m going to back date it because I don’t want to go looking for this post in the future and not be able to find it. I read/watched/listened to all this in July but I just haven’t gotten around to writing the reviews.

Anyway, July was a pretty crazy month. My grandmother passed away so we flew to Arkansas for the funeral. Then we took a trip to celebrate our anniversary. I didn’t get a whole lot of reading, watching, or listening done. We only saw one Movie Pass movie together and then I saw one by myself. Anyway, here’s what I thought of the media I did consume. Oh! Also, I decided to add star ratings to these from now on.

Books:

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte – 5/5 stars

Ok so I didn’t love Jane Eyre at first. But I was warned that the first 10 chapters are hard to get through so I expected it and I kept on. Then it got really good. I remember thinking “This is my kind of book. Why do I ever try to read anything besides classics or old literature from the 1800s?”

Then this one thing happened and I got really angry at one of the characters. And I thought the story was going to go a certain way and I got sort of mad at Jane herself too. But it turns out Jane is a fantastic and strong woman after all!

So I started enjoying the book again and thinking Jane was the hardcore woman that she is. But then I realized I didn’t really want this life to be all there was to Jane’s story. I still had a lot more of the book to read so I figured this wasn’t going to be all there was to the rest of Jane’s story. Then a couple crazy things happened. I mean, I was laying in bed and I very audibly gasped. Pearson wanted to know what was so surprising so I had to try to explain it to him.

But these surprising events led to another decision that Jane had to make and for some reason, I doubted her again. Silly me. But that brings us to the BANG of an ending.

Was that cryptic enough for you? Actually probably not. I was trying not to give too much away and now I’m thinking I might have done just that.

Your Marriage Today… And Tomorrow by Crawford and Karen Loritts – 4/5 stars

I highly recommend this book to anybody who’s engaged or married! It had so much more to offer than I expected. Read my full review here.

Blog Posts/Articles:

TV Shows:

Anne with an E S2 – 5/5 stars

Oh my goodness. I believe this season was even better than the first. If that’s possible. I fell in love with Anne’s crazy spirit all over again! And the influence she has on her family and community is amazing. She made changes and made waves! Yes I know it’s fiction but it’s a story that everybody needs to see or read. Speaking of reading, I just checked out 4 of the books in the Anne of Green Gables series so be looking for those reviews next month!

Parks and Rec

Yeah we re-watched the second half of Parks & Rec this month. For the third time. It was just as fantastic as the first two times. There is not a single character in that show that I dislike. It’s pretty much genius.

Movies:

Ant-Man and The Wasp – 5/5 stars

Of course this movie was fantastic. I wasn’t surprised at all. I honestly don’t even know how to review it because I think most people already know what to expect from the MCU and have a standard. This movie exceeded that standard as each new release seems to do. And there were definitely a few surprises. What I really liked about it was that the trailers didn’t giveaway the whole story like so many seem to do these days.

Waitress (the movie) – 3/4 stars

So, I don’t think it’s a secret but I love the music in the Broadway show, Waitress. I had heard about the show several years ago and started listening to the music. I fell in love. Well then it came to Columbus so a friend and I went to see it. I really liked the show as well.

So when I saw the DVD of the original movie at my library, I decided to give it a shot. And I was disappointed. I guess the music made the show. Not only that but my favorite secondary characters seem played down a lot. I guess that’s what happens when they don’t get their own song. And the bad guy seemed a lot worse in the stage show as well.

Mamma Mia! – 5/5 stars

I have ALWAYS loved this movie. From the first time my dad “made” us watch it (My dad loves musicals as much as I do, plus he was a kid/teen in the 70s and Abba was his jam). Anyway, I’ve seen it at least half a dozen times. And I got the privilege of seeing it on stage when the Broadway show came to Columbus a couple years ago. Anyway, all this to saw I’ve always been a fan and when I watched it last week in preparation for the sequel/prequel, it did not disappoint.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again – 5/5 stars

You guys! Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was absolutely amazing! I mean it was everything I could have wished for and more. I loved the story, I loved the music, I loved the casting, I loved the outfits and the colors. The while aesthetic seemed to scream Charlene. I did think the Cher thing was kinda silly and pointless. She wasn’t a large part of the story and I felt like they kinda just stuck her in at the end to please the kids from the 70s. Which is basically what they did. But I don’t think it really took anything away from the movie either. All in all fantastic!

Oh and I think it’s worth mentioning that this was the only movie I’ve ever watched in a theater by myself. I would have never done that a year or so ago. It was actually quite liberating!

Listening:

Sara Bareilles

After watching the Waitress movie, I started listening to more Sara Bareilles. (She wrote the music for the Waitress musical). I don’t know what it is about her and her music but I feel like she gets me. I love it all!

The Avett Brothers

Pearson and I flew into Memphis for my grandmother’s funeral and my brother and his wife picked us up on their way to the funeral in Arkansas. My brother and his wife absolutely love the Avett Brothers. In fact, my brother proposed at an Avett Brothers concert. So we listened to a lot of Avett Brothers in their car and I sort of fell in love with them again.

Delta Rae

Delta Rae is very similar to the Avett Brothers. Pearson discovered them a couple years ago and shared them with me. Anyway, listening to the Avett Brothers again got me listening to Delta Rae again. I highly recommend them both.

The Civil Wars

I used to absolutely love The Civil Wars. I was obsessed. They are also very similar to the two bands mentioned above. So of course I started listening to them again too. Amazing.

Therapy Thoughts podcast

As I mentioned in my Monthly Goals for August (remember from the confession at the top I’m writing this on August 6th), I am trying to eat intuitively. That is thanks to MindfulCounseling and BodiPosiCounselor on Instagram. Well, Tiff of Mindful Counseling also had a podcast called Therapy Thoughts (she also does little “Therapy thoughts” snippets on Instagram Stories all the time). Anyway, the podcast and her Instagram account have both already changed a lot of my toxic ideas about body image and diet culture. I can’t recommend them enough!

What have you been reading, watching, and listening to lately? Have any recommendations for me? Let me know in the comments!
Thanks for reading!
